A floating or Seanking Copper Ball?

ok in my Phisical Science class to day we had a lab, the teacher had a copper ball that he put in a bowl of water and the copper ball was floating in it. then he heated up the water and the copper ball sank to the bottome of the bowl.the starting tep. for the water befor it was heated up was 20 degrees C and when it sank it was 79 degrees C. can anybody tell me why this happend i have a general idea of why it happend but i am not shure.
