Towel or beach blanket directly on the sand.The plastic will make it too hot.
Use two towels. This way people wont think your weird. Have fun.

I take an old blanket and put it on the sand, it's larger, it's soft, and I don't care if it gets dirty and sandy...This is the way to keep sand out of my towel.
