Question:

AC motor run capacitor replacement?

The existing capacitor is 35/3/370. Can I get a new one that is 35/5/370?What does the second number (5) stand for anyway? Thanks.

Answer:

You have a dual run capacitor. One side, 35 MFD is for the compressor and the other side (3 MFD) is for the condenser fan motor. Most capacitors have a + or - 10% rating. So, the 5 MFD you're wanting to use, is slightly oversized. You could use it to get by for a short time, but I would try to get the exact replacement.
sure I even have considered this situation and it grow to be because of the fact the motor wasnt the right motor for the unit.. just about all condenser fan autos are completely enclosed..or on some previous instruments if the motor had openings on the backside of the motor there could desire to have been a water slinger that grow to be greater advantageous in diameter than the motor to sidestep water from being blown or splashed into motor....the least complicated restoration is to purchase a water slinger and deploy it between your fan blade and your motor...
Be on gard not to succumb to this devlish seperation of you from your hard-erned money. Chances are you will be sold a fake capacitor. Unless it is the size of a lb coffee can and is tested for right action before buying, it can-not be trusted to perform what is required. I suspect you are trying a last gasp to fire the compressor,on your ac. If the unit is 10yrs+ old, forget it and shop for anew condensor unit. If you want that handeled quick, expect to pay a grandper 2 tons. or less tons.
