Question:

After my 20% weekly water changes do I really need to add a biological additive along with chlorine remover?

80 gallon bowed aquarium, cycle aquarium for over a year or so now. Fishes are as follows:(2) Oscars (1) jack Dempsy (1) Featherfin Squeaker Catfish and (1) Common Pleco

Answer:

The only additive you need once the tank is established is the dechlorintator. Any thing like biospira should only be used during the cycle. FYI, when those fish are full grown your tank will be overstocked.
Your tank should be established by now, meaning the good bacteria that keeps down the ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, and other harmful chemicals should be fully developed and doing there jobs. To find out if it is fully established you can use an aquarium test kit, or test strips. If all the chemical levels are low.you don't need the biological additive. You can find testing supplies at most pet stores. As far as the chlorine remover, I would keep that up. If you have ever been a pool with strong chlorine, it's kinda miserable. Now imagine living in that. Not only is would it be miserable for your fish, but it could kill the good bacteria in your tank, and then you would have to continue to add the biological additive.
I don't add anything other than water safety treatment to mine unless I'm doing a large water change but if you've been doing this and have had a successfully running tank for an entire year then perhaps continuing is a good thing. After allif it ain't broken
