By weighing the plant: For this take a potted plant. Cover the pot and the soil with a rubber sheet completely, so that no evaporation of water occurs from the soil. Now weigh the whole pot. Then keep the pot in the open. After 2-3 hours, weigh the pot again. The weight will definitely decrease. This decrease in weight will indicate the quantity of water which was lost as water vapour from the aerial parts of the plant. This method of measuring transpiration can be used only in the case of small plants
You are preforming a manual test by pushing the test button. If you want to see if the alarm works light a small piece of paper and let it burn so that the alarm pick up and will prove it works. Do not set a phone book on fire to preform the test a small piece of paper will work. If the batteries are good and it is a stand alone alarm, meaning it's not tied together with other alarms in your home, then it would be better to get another one to replace it. They will not last for ever and it is okay not know what to do as long as you can ask a question. Easy.
