Question:

amateur radio earthing, can i earth the radio to my copper water pipes in my home?

i have a 12v yeasu amateur radio and it blew a fuse last night, a friend told me it could be bacause the radio is not earthed and it would work better earthed, but heres the thing i live in a multi story high flat and i dont have acces to a garden to insert an earthing rod and to run a wire to my radio, but i do have copper water pipes running all through my house, so i was wandering what if i ran a wire from my radio onto the copper pipes of my home, would that be an earth ????? plz help thanks.

Answer:

do you want roof top antenna lightning strikes to come into your home or to your back garden?
It is unlikely that you blew a fuse due to poor grounding. But Grounding is very important in amateur radio. The better the RF ground the better. If you make a good connection to the water pipe, that will be better than nothing but not nearly as good as a proper ground Consider moving. In the mean time read up on counterpoise
