Question:

Any alternatives to clear vinyl? Or can I omit it altogether?

I‘m planning to make a (cloth) luggage tag and an iPod case using sewing patterns, but both of them call for clear vinyl (for the windows) Neither my sewing machine nor I am up for using that stuff, so are there any alternatives out there or can I just forgo the windows?

Answer:

The process is: material cutting-inner cuicuit-lamination-target hole-mechanical drilling-desmear-PTH Panel platin-image transfer-etching-AOI-sloder mask-silk screen-surface finishing-out line-e-testing-FQA inspection-FQA-Pachage-shipment.
1st, I am curious as to why you are not up to using the clear vinyl. I know it is slippery to sew on the machine and I always put a piece of tissue paper under it when sewing it on the machine. But the patterns are sure cute! So, you can use self adhesive clear vinyl on both the tag and the ipod case.cut one piece for the inside and one piece for the outside so they will stick to each other and not the paper in the tag and not the ipod inside the case. I would not leave out the vinyl as it will surely be protection for the items. But, that is jmho.
Vinyl come in various weights. You do not need the heaviest, which can be difficult to sew. I think your needle may be more of an issue than your machine. Either a leather needle or a Microtex should be right. Experiment on scraps before ploughing into the project. I suggest starting with a finer needle such as a size 70, rather than a heavier one which will do more damage to the vinyl. Also use a longer stitch length than you would for fabric alone.
I think a white, beige or gray silk or polyester organza would be see-through enough to see the information on the luggage tag. And strong enough to last. Good luck with your project.
