Are and coal and iron ore mines in the UK still in use and why do people say they have no resources to sell.?

I would assume the steel production would take a huge part in the T 45 destroyer battle ship. Anyways just wondering if the they use there own or have the raw materials imported now a days which would be very disappointing.
