Think of a whirlpool in water (vortex) its that.. but in space ! you lazy git ! I did the simplistic search possible . You did want it simple.
'All an astronomer knows about black holes' and 'keep it simple' don't go together well. They're dead, dense stars with immense gravitational fields. What else do you need to know, and what confused you when doing research about them (since asking questions here does not count as research)?
A black hole forms with what is left of a star after it blows up, or goes supernova. The core of that large star is all that is left. If it is large enough its gravity will become unimaginably strong. It now has the power to destroy almost anything in its path. A black hole is born. Black holes could easily destroy our Sun. They have such great gravity not even light can escape. Earth would have no chance, unless we can learn how to harness that incredible energy.
How far is the window? How high is the building (the window to ground distance)? Is the door an exit from the room or the building? If the door leads in to other rooms is the rest of the building on fire? Why am I in a room that is so big? 90 second run almost 1/4 of a mile (1/2 km)
