I used a gas additive once on my car when I had it filled up (STP) for fuel efficiency and added boost, is it advisable? are there any side effects of gas additives?
no its really a myth, ive been working in automotive and engines for years, these additive really dont do much unless you use them alot lets say twice or more a monththen yes thats a problem, but the GOOD additives are the ones that actually work like prestone or gumoutthe only side effect that ive heard is that fuel can run a little rich, this means that the gas is so heavy of its self an solvent that it doent even ignite and might build up pressure but the odds of breaking an engine by this are exponetially great.
As a rule of thumb, are not. One thing I've tried is a fuel system flush with BG. It can be done at a dealership, it's not a 'do-it-yourself'. I noticed a 3% increase in mileage, for the next 10k. That, however didn't justify to me the expense of the procedure. Check some of the reports and studies. Below is just one on those reports. Others can be obtained through a web search as 'gas additives for autos'. In the end, it's your call. Just get the facts, and do the math to see what it's true cost is and if there is any real savings.
if you have a newer car with electronic fuel injection, there is no need to add anything to your fuel. Older cars with a carburator might benifit a little, but is usually not enough to justify the cost of the additive. Government and oil companies already add tons of additives to your gasoline, depending upon where you live. It varies from state to state and even season to season. The gas you get in December is not the same gas that you get in July. Newer cars are also designed to run on 89 octane. Unless your owners manual says use high octane (usually high compression sports cars) then dont waste your money on the expisive stuff.
