Question:

Are septic tank additives really necessary?

I have heard that they are not and the necessary bacteria is there from the human waste dumped into the tank. There are numerous sites that say additives are necessary and of course those sites recommend you buy it from them. So is there ever a reason to use them and which ones if any are good and which ones are scams? Also I know someone who says they haven‘t had their tank pumped in 10 years and it still works fine, but every septic site says to pump your tank every 1-3 years. Will the bacteria in a well maintained tank naturally destroy the solids making pumping unnecessary?

Answer:

Solder and close them up AFTER testing the solder! Nothing is going to happen in either event. There is really no need to awaken a sleeping bear in Boston.there may be codes that all you are doing MUST be done by a licensed plumber! You do not want to get into that mess! Goldwing
You are correct. NO ADDITIVES at all. Just human waste. No grease etc. I have had this house for 34 years and have only had it pumped about 4 times. Now the new ordanace says I must get it pumped every 3 years. NO ADDITIVES.
Root killer has to go into our lines because the lines will get half way stopped up. Water will come out onto the ground. And an odor will come up the drains. Rid x is put in 1 time a month. It eats the crap in the tank. It puts enzymes into the tank. If all this is not done the tank can back up into the house. We were lucky ours backed up into one of the bath tubs. Horrible. Bleach cleaned the tub. Bleach is not to be put in a septic tank.
I live in a rural area of north Michigan and the question of additives comes up quite often. I looked into the subject some years back and the consensus of articles and opinions was: No additives are necessary. Pumping is recommended every three years to remove articles that do not decay along with grease and fat that tends to collect at the top surface. Pumping is also valuable to determine the condition of the tank as well as providing information regarding the drain field. Accompany the sewage pump operator and ask questions of him - you will be surprised what he can tell by looking at the tank interior and the exit to the drain field.
