Question:

Are there any advantages to upgrading the electric panel for my house?

I am having solar panels installed for my 50+ year old house. The site evaluation people came by and thought they could use my existing electric panel, but they are not completely sure. I haven‘t had many problems with it. When I had a pool heater installed, the people made a separate circuit breaker near the heater rather than the electric panel. But otherwise, it hasn‘t been an issue. So my question is whether I should take this opportunity to upgrade the electric panel in case of future need, or wait till it no longer works, and upgrade then. I am not an electrician, so I don‘t know why I would need to upgrade the electric panel if the solar installation guys say what I have is old but is good enough for their purposes. Thanks.

Answer:

get a separate board fitted, leave the old one alone, you realize don't you that solar panels degrade about 8% a year so projected output is never achieved and after 4-5 years you will be getting around half the output, you will find that solar energy cost about 5 times regular mains electricity
If you have a proper sized panel with enough circuits and has breakers it should work just fine.
i dunno what they add but sheel gas is the best around i find that my car has way more power when i use sheel gas compaired to anything else and mohawk gas is watered down so much that its sh1t if u have a good car use only the best gas makes sence to me lol
Hoo boy tough call. A new panel isn't cheap. So if the existing will suffice you might do well to leave it alone. Unless. Open the cover and look at the label. If it says FPE, Replace it! FPE breakers are a known fire hazard. Do an internet search and you'll see what I mean. Also, if you chose to replace it I strongly suggest 5 estimates. That way you can ignore the lowest as well as the highest. Then pick from the middle based on reputation. Make them break their estimate down by price per part and the labor separate. Sq D is a very good brand. But you want to specify a copper buss bar, not aluminum or plated.
