Question:

Automotive wire?

Can electrical wire from a 50 ft drop cord be used to re-wire the lights on a old car with a 12 volt system ?

Answer:

you could but i would suggest that you go to an automotive store and get new wiring.
Yes, but it is not oil and gasoline resistant and the oil base products used in the vehicle will dissolve the insulation cause a fire hazard. You need automotive rated wire because the insulation will resist oil and gasoline and the high temperatures of an automobile.
Most important is the wire a large enough gage to carry the load. The voltage is not the deciding factor. Amperage is. It is possible to melt or burn wire from a trouble light with the current from a 12 volt auto battery.
I wouldn't recommend it. It isn't designed for the elements or the heat it will encounter. You can buy wire by the roll at any parts store for a very reasonable price. Mickey mousing is what usually leads to fires.
yea, you can use an extension cord, i did it before. after all its 110 and your car is only 12 volts.
