Question:

Back boiler fire fronts ?

Hi, Me and my girlfriend r moving into a house and the heating system they have in them is a back boiler with a old gas fire on the front.... The ones that r like a set bk fromThe 60's I was just wondering could I get the fire removed.... Put a stop tap from it where the fire should be and replace it with a fake fire surround as it is terrible and I don't really wanna pull put a fortune when it's a rented house and I will only be there for a few years ha.

Answer:

You cannot do that because the fire is part of the backboiler. The back boiler gets its gas supply via the gas fire. The fire also acts as a sealing plate for the back boiler to ensure that the burnt fumes from the fire do go into the chimney, and not into the living space. Finally, your Landlord would not be happy about this type of alteration that could be potentially dangerous.
Unfortunately you cant use the fire without the boiler or in your case the boiler without the fire as the flue from the fire slots into the boiler if you removed the fire you would have an opening that fumes could escape. The only option is to swap to a combi boiler if you want a new fireplace
