Question:

Basic rule of hot and neutral electrical wires?

Hi, I am a general contractor but I do a lot of work on both houses and cars. I know that the black and red wires are reversed if you look at a house vs. a car, the black is pos/neutral and the red is same the opposite of the black but I can't remember which is which. I just cant remember! (and if you think I must be a retard you are right, I got in an accident long time ago so very little memory). Thanks for the help

Answer:

If you open the neutral in the circuit you get full voltage to one of the white wires. The neutral wire is a path for the electricity back from the load to the service. Under normal conditions there can be a small voltage between the neutral and the ground wire. This voltage drop due to the resistance and the amps in the white wire. It depends on how far the white wire is from the service and the load. The ground should only be connected to the white wire at the service, breaker box. the white and neutral are not to be connected any where else. You are probably getting static shocks because the air is dry from heating and you are touching the metal screw on the switch box. The box and the frame of the switch must be grounded. If the neutral is from the light and you disconnect the wires, you will get 117 volts to ground and to the other neutral.
positive or + is red in cars and, negative or - is black(it is also earth). In houses, red is live and blue(uk) is neutral and green is earth. So in cars, you have 2 wires and in the houses you have 3 wires. Do not make a mistake and swap them or else BOOM.
red + black - in auto home white neutral black hot
A car battery has a red positive wire and a black negative engine/body ground wire. House wiring has a black or red hot wire and a white return (ground) wire with a green safety ground wire. But you can't depend on wire color in all applications. Don't assume any color is one thing or another without checking it.
