Question:

Bathroom light fixture help?

We want to remodel our bathroom from 80's style ugly medicine cabinet with built in light to something nicer looking. The problem I'm noticing is the medicine cabinet's light is the only light for the bathroom. I do like the portfolio light fixtures compared to the ugly multiple globe bulb light fixtures, but am afraid the portfolio light fixture won't cast light throughout the whole bathroom. Is my thinking correct?

Answer:

If you hire an electrician, they should be able to give you more than one light source from the same switch. Maybe you could turn that one light into two wall sconces on either side, possibly adding a light from above as well? If they were all put them on a dimmer switch you could more easily control the light too. I really don't like ugly medicine chests either. My advice is to take them out all together and hang a nice mirror there instead. Recently I racked my brain on a small bathroom makeover that had no medicine cabinet, only a niche with glass shelves, opposite another mirror. It was so hard to find medicine cabinet that looked good, but having all your stuff on view isn't pretty either. After seeing a display for plantation shutters in the store, it hit me that they could work as a medicine cabinet door. Maybe it could work for you too, as long as it isn't over the sink? Choosing great bathroom light fixtures can be a tad confusing for anyone who is not a professional interior decorator. Light level - When looking at the light fixtures that you may want, you need to consider the light level you want for your bathroom. Location – typically, light fixtures should be placed so that you can illuminate the room, while also being able to illuminate your face so that you can better see what you are doing when you are having or putting on makeup. Either way, where you plan on putting your light fixtures will also have an impact on what kind of light fixtures you can even have. Style – when choosing your light fixtures, try to focus on how they will interact with the style of your bathroom.
You actually need three sources of light in most rooms. Natural light- window. Ceiling light/fan combo is great for a bathroom. Two side lights illuminating either side of the face. Lighting above a mirror casts shadows. Make up and shaving alike are less than great! That is the optimum.
