Question:

Best bike frame material?

I'm looking for a really lightweight bikeI currently have a steel framed bike and it's way too heavy for meSo what's the better/more practical of the two: chromoly or aluminum?

Answer:

It's fine, in fact wrapping in layers helps to avoid freezer burn.
well wrapping in foil helps to a point i do but no more than 4 month in foili buy steaks and wrap them in foil bu tno lnger than 4 months in the foil
It is goodBut, only if you wrap it in a few layers of plastic wrap or a ziploc bag firstMake sure you push out as much air as possible, then tightly wrap with aluminum foilIt will help prevent freezer burn prolonging the life of your food productThere is no saying how long it will actually lastIt depends on your freezer and what your freezingJust remember most importantly to push as much air out as possible when putting in a bag or plastic wrap first.
Aluminum Foil Vs Plastic Wrap
Your steel framed bike may be heavy for reasons other than the frameThe frame of your bike counts for less than 25% of the total weight of your bikeAll the other components weigh far more than the frame doesThe difference in weight between a really good chromoly and a good aluminum frame will be a pound at mostThis is certainly not enough to turn a 20 pound bike into a 15 pound bikeWhere you reduce weight is more important than the amount you take offIf you take two bikes of equal weight, the bike with the lighter wheels will feel much lighter and more responsiveThat is why many racers will train with heavier wheelsNot only are the heavier training wheels stronger and less prone to damage, when the rider changes to his race wheels, the bike feels ready to flyAnother area where weight can be reduced is the forkA really good carbon fork weighs about half as much as an entry level carbon fork, and it could weigh one third what a steel fork doesSaddles: the leather saddle on my first good bike weighed about 450 grams, the one on my current bike: 190 gramsWhether you go with steel or aluminum, you have to look at the whole packageA good modern steel frame does not exact a big weight penalty, and may have a much nicer ride that you will appreciate at the end of a long rideI went from a steel bike to titanium, then carbon because I value comfort over light weight.
