I have a 454 thats working on about 550hp. Its bolted to a Muncie 4spd right now but I keep blowing the tranny up. The motor is in an 80 Camaro right now but I want to drop it into a Chevelle. A 5spd would be the best since its my primary vehicle.
why do you keep blowing trans? do you have a warped bellhousing, a bent crankshaft or other driveline abnormalities? check that first before spending money on other than a muncie m22.
I would go for a NV4500 out of the GM trucks. Hydraulic actuated clutch and will bolt right up to your motor. They have a 460ft-lb power rating on them.
The LENCO ST1200 transmission. The LENCO ST1200 transmission has been specifically designed and engineered for severe duty street/strip applications. The ST1200 gives you the advantage of LENCO brute strength at a lesser price than our full race units. The ST1200 is pure LENCO through and through and is ideally suited for nitrous, blown, injected and carbureted engines producing up to 1200 HP and 900 lb ft of torque. As with all LENCO transmissions the ST1200 is a planetary design and comes with up to 6 forward speeds. Shift with either our patented multi lever system or with the optional, more compact CO2 setup. Multiple speeds are achieved through utilization of multiple cases.
a borg-warner t5 is an excellent transmission. Look for the ones out of the 3rd gen camaros because the shifter is on the end of the trans where you need it in a car. Preferably 88-92 because those are world class t5's and are much stronger. Now you can go with a v6 trans or a v8 trans. The difference is the v6 trans has a lower 1st, 3rd, and 5th gear; so it will pull harder in those gears. The other difference is spline count the v8 has 26 splines the v6 has 14. You just have to buy a clutch accordingly. Now as someone already stated one out of an s10 of those years will also work but you'll have to change tailshaft because of the shifter location. Hope this helps.
Muncie M22 or a Borg Warner T-10 both are rock crushers
