Question:

Bike crank and bottom bracket problem?

Currently, I have a square taper bottom bracket in my racer bike. I need to buy a crank but I am not sure what to buy. Do all square taper crank fit a square taper bottom bracket? If not, what would likely be my problem/s? Thanks!

Answer:

It may change your chain line up to 6 mm.
Don't worry. The square taper of your bottom bracket spindle will fit the new square drive crank. If you are reusing your old chainrings, you will need to select a crankset with the same bolt pattern and size (Bolt Circle Diameter). You may have the opportunity at this time to select between several sizes of crank length. You can find some useful advice at your bike shop. But if riding with the old crank gave you no problems with the knees, it's okay to get the same size.
My experience is that all square taper cranks fit all square taper bottom brackets/ Your only problem could possible be that the tapers are slightly different so a different bottom bracket might be needed - but I've never found this. The exception might be certain campag cranks with their self extraction system.
What bottom brackets and which cranksets? Breaking where? Inventory bearing of what? Are you now not using the inventory bearing? Did you break that one? You wholly don't specify some thing.
