Hi All,I was wanting to know,on the quality bikes such as Trek,Giant etc is the aluminum frames as strong as the steel frame bikes? I have heard conflicting reports on this,so thought I would ask here for more input. Thanks!
I wouldn't worry about strength so much. I have never heard of anyone breaking a aluminum frame. One difference to consider is stiffness. A aluminum frame bike seems to be more stiff of a ride than steel ( talking chrome molly), stiffness has good and bad points depending on how you plan to ride.
Steel is stronger than aluminum. But, you have to consider the strength to weight ratio and stiffness. Modern aluminum frames use hydro-forming to optimize the tube shapes. They also use modern welding and bonding techniques. In short, a good aluminum frame can be better than a steel frame and have less weight. Consider a Cannondale CAAD alloy frame or a hybrid composite/alloy frame such as a Cannondale Six. Cannondale is know for pioneering alloy frames.
Dustin You are close, but not quite right. Steel is a great frame material, It can be heavier than its aluminum counter part, But, steel often provides a much nicer ride. Aluminum tends to be a very stiff and rigid ride that many do not like. I have had frames made of all materials. I can say that I have never met a frame material that I did not like. Check the weight of the frames you are looking at. If there is more than two pound (or so) difference then the aluminum frame would be my choice. Soccerref
Someone stated even the $99 walmart bikes are aluminum now. WRONG! Most Walmart bikes have steel frames unless you drop about $200.00. Personally, I prefer aluminum over steel. It's lighter, most times - just as strong and won't rust if you get a ding or scrape in the paint. See links below on Trek M/B. Trek 820 - steel frame - $329.99. Trek 3500 - aluminum frame - $359.99.
