i have lights on trailer but no brake lights or turn signals it is a 4 prong hook up
Often the ground is at fault. Sometimes it takes taking the trailer around the block to get a good connection on the ball for the ground.
Presumably two of the four wires are connected; the other two would be for brake lights and turn signals. You will need to make appropriate connections on the towing vehicle to get things to work.
The colour code for trailers is as follows, white-ground, brown-running, yellow-left turn, green-right turn and blue would be for trailer brakes if your trailer has them or auxiliary. If your adapter (on the Dakota) is hooked up properly those are the wire colours that run from your vehicle into the trailer lights and the signal lights will also be the brake lights.
The most basic of designs is the color coded 4-WIRE system which uses a brown wire for tail, license, and side marker lights, yellow wire for left hand stop and turn, green wire for right hand stop and turn, and white wire for system ground. The Flat-4 harness plug is found on almost all boat trailers and many smaller utility trailers that do not have brakes. sound like u only have brown and white connected.
take a test light and check the yellow and green wires they are your brake /turn signals. Also if you have the amber lights in the tailamps of your vehicle you will need the conversion kit
