Question:

Boiler Installation - Quote from British Gas?

Hi AllJust brief background - house currently has combi boiler but is shot so need a new one installed. Small 2 bedroom house, 1 bathroom, 5 radiators. British Gas has quoted ?2350 and that is with a potterton promax combi 28 HE+ and is a boiler we would preferably need - is this reasonable price for work needed?Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!!!!!!!!

Answer:

For BG to do the work that's a good price. You get what you pay for and it's piece of mind that it's done right first time and there is come back if anything goes wrong. 28 kw relates to the hot water output not the ch output do ignore the other comments. You will get cheaper but if it goes wrong will he come back without an argument? Will he cover your whole system for a year? How can you be 100% sure their quality of work is good?
get a Good furnace ,[hot air flow] forget the junkie boilers there nothing but trouble,
YIKES!! 28kw = ~95,500 BTU in the old currency. That is a _huge_ boiler for such a small house - and unless you are in a very cold climate, have no insulation and bad windows, you should not need anywhere near that size unit especially as you have only one bathroom. The smaller unit (24) will be more than adequate. We have a 420 meter, three story house with 4 bathrooms - our unit is only 67KW and is more than adequate. Now for the rest of it: Apparently the ProMax is a condensing, modulating direct-combustion unit - that is very efficient and uses outside air. The boiler will cost you ~?900 +/-. If you have an existing unit and space is adequate, installation should take less than a day and require little additional work other than (perhaps) a circulator and related controls - perhaps another ?300 in parts and fittings. Venting may also take some work - and a power-vent kit (if necessary) will run in the ?100 range. That puts the rest in labor. Get at least three prices from different contractors. Seems a bit high to me. If you are used to radiant heat you will be very unhappy with forced-air heat - between the dust and the chill it is not the best thing in your climate. For the record, the 24KW boiler modulates to 33KW (check the specifications) - and so will give far more than enough hot water for one (1) bathroom. 28KW is overkill.
