Question:

Bulldozer gen. 2 for AMD AM3+ motherboard?

I hear rumors that the Bulldozer processors will just live 6 months before a new generation of bulldozer processors come out. Will the next generation also work on AM3+ motherboards?

Answer:

Yes... but more like 9 months to a year. yes, They're moving everything to socket FM2. Bulldozer 2 is moving to socket FM2. A lot of this is to do with their expansion of APUs. However, they're aren't jumping to the 22nm process until 2013. At least, they're going to produce more in the next 2 years than the have in the previous 2 years. I don't know if a FM2 processor would be BWC with an AM3+ board. The AM3 Phenom II processors are BWC with some of the AM2+ motherboards as long as the BIOS supports the processor. The Phenom II processors can also handle DDR2 memory but it runs that memory at much lower speeds.
Nope. Second generation Bulldozer processors will use new sockets. FM2 on the desktop, and C2012 / G2012 on the server.
** Update*** Oh I misread your question... on that, who knows? I wouldn't count on it.... if there's any significant change it will probably require a new socket. AM2+ was nice, but eventually we needed AM3. **** Yes, that's what distinguishes AM3+ motherboards from AM3 boards- support for the upcoming Bulldozer CPUs.
