Question:

Can a boiler explode to such an extent that it can demolish a building if it fails?

like the type of boiler used to heat buildings or homes?

Answer:

Yes, and it has happened. There are several scenarios - a). a boiler is a pressure vessel, and if pressure within the boiler 'runs away' ,an explosion can occur that physically damages the building. b). a gas-fired boiler leaks gas, the gas is ignited, damaging the building c). a boiler explosion causes enough damage to the boiler such that the flame in the boiler starts a fire that damages the building One of the most dramatic boiler explosions of recent years occurred at a power plant in Detroit in 1998
an ordinary hot water heater can do the same if the safety releases are tampered or fail.
