Question:

Can a powerfull magnet disarm clothing security tags?

hey.first off i want to say; im not a shop lifter or plan to be one, i asked a question earlier on shop security because i just think that there are so many flaws!i now know that sometimes clothing without the big chunky grey tags sometimes have smaller alarms on them, like a microchip in the label, or a copper antenna behind the bar code.if shop lifters know that these exist but are too small to see, would they use a very power full magnet (such as a hard drive magnet) to render the alarm in the clothing useless?i know that magnets can ruin computers, if they just swipe it over the label a few times in the changing rooms, would this ruin the small computer inside? or would it still set off the alarm when you leave?as i said before, im not a shop lifter, i am just so very surprised that shop security is so low!

Answer:

Hang on people . not everyone who asked the question is a shoplifter (not lifterr) or stealer or a bad person . I bought several items of clothing and the check-out chick forgot to remove one. This is a Checkpoint security tag. Contrary to what people belief, there was no ink inside. The unit works by having 4 mini ball-bearings grabbing onto the pin. I move the balls by using a magnet from a broken hard disk drive. If you have a broken HDD, open it up and remove a couple of strong magnets inside . they are great to stick things on your fridge and to move the balls too) After I removed the tag without any force or damage to the tag. I then put it back again (on an old piece of clothing, naturally) then I used the pointy ends of a mini pointy pair of pliers as a jemmy bar. I applied some force and the flat piece of metal just broke off from the pin. There you go.
OK, your not a shoplifter. yes it can. when a very powerful magnet is placed near the bar code,it deletes the memory inside the bar code, just like when you put a magnet near your credit card. Because, bar codes are made of copper, like what you said, and the copper stores memory, that's how the price checker works. and when a VERY powerful magnet is placed on top of the chunky grey tag on objects and clothing,it dislatches the tag because the magnet in the tag is placed near the magnet, their poles are sometimes the same, which makes the tag let go of the object/clothing because of the repelling of the magnets.
