Firstly at 8% - this is rather rich ore - worth $12,000 per ton. Some Canadian mines have richer ore - up to 20%. The danger to employees is not from the uranium itself but from the daughter elements - especially radon gas. That is why most equipment in high grade mines is remotely operated. The main radiation emitted by uranium itself is alpha radiation. Alpha radiation is not very penetrating and is stopped by a sheet of paper, so yes a rubber conveyor belt will shield you from the radiation emitted by the ore.
I'm not sure if this holds true for yours, but for a lot of older players, if you remove the player from the dash, there is a small hole in the top with what looks like a slotted-head screw down in it. This is a speed adjustment. You will need enough slack in the wires so that you can adjust this while it is playing so that you can tell when it is the right speed. P.S. You will need a small, jewler's screwdriver.
