Question:

Can I attach an 8-pin power cable to a video card with a 6-pin port?

It wont do any damage will it?

Answer:

Don't do that!! It will kill your video card almost instantly. The 8 pin connector is meant for the motherboard (on most computers) so the 8 pin power cable will output a lot more power than the 6 pin. Your graphics card will be cooked if you do that. Too much voltage will kill your card immediately. Plus how is a 8 pin connector supposed to fit into a 6 pin port? I would be quite surprised if it can actually fit. Go and purchase a power supply with a 6 pin connector, it's for the good of your computer.
yes you can and it will be fine, my 8 pin connectors had clips on the end so i could remove 2 pins and use it as a 6 pin...
It really depends on the what the connector is. If it is a 8 Pin CPU cable, it is a definite no no. However, if it is a 8-pin PCIe cable, then you are safe to plug it in your GPU. However, keep in mind one rule, never force a plug into pins that do not fit.
Actually, Yes you can. There are many cards that have the ability to use the Additional 2 Pins...but if you look at many power supplies...there are 6+2 pin connectors for such cards. The first six pins are the same as the PCIe 6pin Connnector. Just make sure your Square Pins are lined up to make sure that your voltages are correct going into your card. You have Difficulty Physically placing the Connector into the board because the last 2 pins are getting in the way....remove them...simple as that...that is how you put a square peg into a round hole...
No. Can't do that. There's a reason why they have a different number of pins.
