I am going to Saint John usvi in march and I am traveling with my gopro camera which I have five extra battery packs. Am I able to bring them on the place in checked or carry on???
You should check them in with your luggage. Batteries are a concern for airlines. The main thing is to pack them properly so they won't come in contact with something loose and start a fire. I'd pack them individually (you can saran-wrap them), and put the in a box so they won't be loose with other things in your luggage. It should be fine.
You can place them in either checked baggage or carry-on. If you bring them as carry-on. Make sure it is properly stowed inside the carry-on bag when submitting it through x-ray. If you want to transport them as checked baggage and the batteries is lithium ion, just put some electrical tape over the terminals to prevent the possibility of it shorting out and causing a fire. Verbatim from TSA : --- Search Results For: rechargeable batteries Check or Carry-on You may travel with dry batteries (AA, AAA, C, and D) in your carry-on or checked baggage. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) prohibits loose lithium batteries from being transported in checked baggage. Car batteries, wet batteries, or spillable batteries are prohibited from both carry-on and checked baggage unless being used to power a scooter or wheelchair. If a battery is used to power a scooter or wheelchair, you must advise the aircraft operator so that the battery can be properly packaged. Even if an item is generally permitted, it may be subject to additional screening or not allowed through the checkpoint if it triggers an alarm during the screening process, appears to have been tampered with, or poses other security concerns. The final decision rests with TSA on whether to allow any items on the plane. ---
