Question:

Can I change a clutch without using a hoist?

I have a 1998 Sunfire GT and I need to replace my clutch. I'm going to be having friends help me, we've done lots of work on cars but have never changed a clutch. Do you think we would be able to do it properly just jacking the car up and use jack stands? Or will I need a hoist or atleast an engine hoist?Reason for ... its gonna cost $400 getting it done at a garage. thanks

Answer:

as long as you can lift the car high enough to remove the trans then yes. this one isn't that bad to do, but then i'm a mechanic and i have a hoist. are you using a repair manual or just going at it? yes you should have the fly wheel machined, the old clutch disc has worn a pattern into it. if you have a decent floor jack and good jack stands, go for it.
jack up nice and high, make sure stands are good safe ones, yes can be done, lower gearbox onto good garage jack
u can use the jack but my question to u is can u change the clutch disk its not an easy thing
Yes you can, be sure to replace or machine the flywheel. I recommend replacement. Replace the entire clutch kit. Disc, pressure plate pilot bushing/bearing, throwout bearing and lubricate the splines of the input shaft. This will prevent the disc from shuttering on the input shaft. Good luck
you can use a hydraulic jack but i would,nt use jack stands. i would use concrete blocks. jack stands are known to kick out. do you guys know what your getting into? it,s a big chore changing the clutch. just block up under the engine so it won,t drop. don,t forget to change the pilot bearing and put a dab of grease in it too. you might need an alignment tool to center the clutch before tightening the pressure plate. don,t forget to change the throwout bearing too. if your going to do the job then do it right.
