Question:

Can I cover my wood panel walls with gypsum board? I don't want to damage them.?

I have basically read every question on here about this and I haven't found a solution yet!!I want to remodel my parents' basement, which unfortunately is covered with wood panel walls.

Answer:

I'd say the least damage would be with sheetrock screws. Your going to put small holes in the paneling but if you ever take it off, you won't tear it all up pulling out nails. The holes could be neatly filled if that ever happened. Nothing else will work, you try and liquid nail it and removal will be even more damaging. Sheetrock up against the paneling and if a screw tries to pull the sheetrock to far in, find another place or line, make sure subsequent screws are on the level area. Sheetrock isn't going to stand alone, if your parents don't want to do this, you will have to give up.
Anything over top will damage panels. It`s best to remove carefully use it elsewhere or sell it!
You would have to glue, screw or nail the sheet rock over the panel so no matter which way, it will get damaged. If they are willing to cover it, why not let you take it down?
I would paint over the paneling. The fabric will cost you way too much if the whole house is paneled. What you need to do is sand down all the paneling, then put a good indoor primer. Let that dry well, and then paint the walls in a satin or semi-gloss finish. Don't use flat, as it doesn't look good over paneling. It will look beautiful I assure you.
Well then I answered this earlier and have an additional suggestion. There are a number of things you can do .. Get poles that hang from the ceiling and put a full wall of curtain. Get folding screens Get wall paper liner and paper it (it will remove cleanly and you don't have to worry about the ridges). Go to an art Store and get HUGE canvases. Paint them as you would a wall and hang them You can stretch and hang a textured cloth to the 4 corners behind the canvases. ***More answers for you Make floor to ceiling frames 4' x 8' With 1x3 boards paint the frames. Paint then nail 1/4 sheet rock to the back. The frames can be nailed to the paneling with minimal damage. (If the size is to cumbersome for you make them 1/2 height) Make sojhi screens and attach to the floor and ceiling on closet tracks
