Question:

Can I use cement board under my toilet?

I want use cement board 1/2quot; under my toilet and then use carpet to put over that. Is that a good idea? What are my options?

Answer:

Cement board can be used, but I would question the use of carpet. I would suggest Vinyl and a mat that fits around the bowl. They are easier to throw into the washer if there are any oops moments, than having to do the whole carpet.
Yes cement board is the only thing i would be using in a wet area such as toilet, laundry or bathroom as if there are any leaks or overflows the floor will not rot. Not to sure about using carpet in toilet i would probably suggest vinyl or tiles.
Cement board is fine but carpet? Carpet in a bathroom? Carpet is about the worst thing you could use in a bathroom. I would even rather have a wood floor in a bathroom than a carpet. The best flooring in a bathroom would be either linoleum or tiles of various materials. Solid surfaces are best for areas that get wet as long as they are protected properly.
Cement board is harmless under the stool, but not very smooth. I had carpet in my bathroom for years and LOVED it!!!!!!!! I was a single guy back then with less than perfect cleaning skills. But the carpet was perfect for that. It was wall-to-wall throw carpet. When it looked bad, pick it up, throw it in the laundry, then back on the floor. It looked NEW any time I wanted! My wife cringes at the idea of carpet now, but she already knows that at our next house my bathroom will have carpet again. The carpet comes in a large piece. You draw out the footprint of the floor then cut it out with scissors. It's just like a throw rug. I really want it again! I would recommend slapping down cheap vinyl tiles under the carpet so you'll have a finished floor on laundry day.
yup you can use cement board on floors, walls, ceilings... anywhere you think moisture may be a problem. as for putting carpet on it, you can, but it wouldnt be my first choice, just because carpet can hold onto moisture and possibly encourage mold. if you like carpet, go ahead, but watch the moisture. otherwise, use tile or lino, and use area rugs.
