I know this may seem redundant, but bare with me.Is there any difference at all between these two functions?f(x) 1/x vs f(x) 1/[x]f(x) 0.5x + 1 vs f(x) [0.5x] + 1Yes square brackets. Cause our assignment is to match functions with equations and two of the given functions are those two, but are there any differences between them? Thanks so much!!
[ ] and ( ) make no difference when calculating. It is only used to make the problem look much better and cleaner when there are multiple brackets such as [(1+2) * 5] + 5 Or you may have mistaken the absolute sign ( |x| ) with the square brackets ( [x] ). These two would have a significant difference.
it depends in what math your in. if your in a high school math class, then they mean the same. In a high college math class it might mean the greatest integer function. hope this helps.
Square brackets are no difference from other brackets. 1/x 1/(x) 1/[x] 3x + 2 (3x + 2) [3x + 2] 2x + 4 2(x + 2) 2[x + 2] EDIT: The only time they make a difference is for a range of values: (-2,2) means all values from -2 -2 including the numbers -2 and 2 [-2,2] means all values from -2 -2 not including the numbers -2 and 2 but I don't think that is an issue for you.
