Question:

Can ultraviolet light rays pass through plastic?

Can ultraviolet light rays pass through plastic

Answer:

A mirror
Ultraviolet light travels as photons or tiny mass-less packets of pure energy that can interact with the electrons of atoms or molecules. UV light exhibits shorter wavelengths than infrared or visible light and is therefore more energetic and penetrating. UV light can penetrate thin clouds on an overcast day causing sunburns. X-rays and gamma rays having even shorter wavelengths are more energetic and penetrating than UV. As such UV light may be reflected, absorbed or pass through glass or plastic depending upon the composition and transparency of the material. UV light can pass through a glass windshield to be absorbed within interior materials of a car yielding trapped heat that can not as easily escape (the greenhouse effect). Common glass (soda glass) partially absorbs UV light. Plastic may contain many additives to facilitate production, function and even color, where dyes selectively absorb photons, allowing you to see the color of the remaining photons. Many (cheap?) plastic sunglasses block light but not much UV causing the Iris to dilatate and receive even more UV.
y ask when you can try it get some uv beads and put plastic on the top
Long wave ultraviolet light (300 to 400 nanometers), which most of us recognize as black light the light that is often used to make decorations glow in discos and theatrical productions. Long wave UV passes easily through plastic and glass. Short wave ultraviolet light (100 to 300 nm) is used to kill bacteria, hasten chemical reactions (as a catalyst), and is also valuable in the identification of certain fluorescent minerals. Unlike long wave UV, the short wave UV cannot pass through ordinary glass nor most plastics. The shortest wavelengths cannot even travel very far through the air before being absorbed by oxygen molecules as they are converted into ozone.
