someone is giving me a sofa bed but it doesn't have the inner fold out bed. Can it still be a comfortable sofa without me falling in?
You can use it, but it's going to feel a bit weird because the fold out bed part is what adds support/stability to the piece when it's being used as a sofa. All I can say is try it to see if it will be comfortable for you. If you find the manufacturer's tag on it, you can always contact the maker to find out if replacement mattress bed mechanism is available for the model that you have. If so, and you decide to order, just know that you'll have to have it installed by someone who works with upholstered furniture.
