Can you use alumium foil for insulation?

Not really,but they do have a bubble plastic with aluminum foil laminated on both sides which is better and strongerThere are two theories for insulationOne is trapping air with fiberglass or some other material which retards air movement between outside temps and insideThat is called conductive heatThe other is IR (infrared) All heat is infrared raysFrom the sun, the penetrate most everything and heat surfaces that absorb themShiny metals and white material reflect these rays back into spaceShiny aluminum reflects better than whiteHowever, you need at least 3/4 inch of air space next to it to be effectiveStapling this bubble aluminum to the inside bottom of rafters would reflect the suns rays back and reflects heat generated inside the structure back to the insideThat keeps the building cooler in the summer and warmer in the winterSo with a normal house, put the aluminum bubble insulation on the bottom of the rafters and Fiberglass or other thermal insulation between the ceiling joistsOne of the things that needs mentioning is that a house must breathA lot of moisture is generated inside the house from cooking and showers so it needs to get ourTyvex house wrap has holes to allow water vapor to escapeThe aluminized bubble insulation also has holesPlastic sheeting and aluminum foil doesn't so in the winter the water vapor would condense on their cold surface and cause water damage to ceilings and wallsThat is why you don't want to use aluminum foil for insulation.
