Question:

Cement board or mold resistant greenboard for a bathroom?

I spoke to a tile guy recently and he told me that only cement board is acceptable for use in bathrooms. He said that green board is not. Why do the sell the greenboard if you cannot use it in bathrooms or areas that will take moisture?

Answer:

Green board is fine..You must have been talking to him for an estimate, of trying to get prices fromhim..cement board is more expensive to hang, and in my view point easier to do when all said and done, for it can be hung easily with one person..I know it weighs more, but it is a compact size, so manuevering it is alot easier..He was stroking you for that Home labotomy Kit he always wanted, but could not afford!
You can use cement board in damp locations but around here it's quite a lot more expensive than greenboard. Greenboard works well and I used it for my entire bathroom because I love long, hot steamy showers and baths. Without greenboard backing the bathroom can start to grow mildew in the drywall.
Greenboard is moisture and mildew RESISTANT not proof. Many local buildings have banned the use of greenboard in high moisture areas due to the fact that they can and many times do break down in time (average 10 years) Cementboard, wire lath and plaster are much better and more permanent solutions. Good Luck
it really depends on what is going on top of the board. if I am using ceramic tile around a tub/shower, I use greenboard. If the tile is granite or porcelain, or will be installed overhead, use wonderboard (cementboard). The additional weight of the tiles could potentially pull the green paper away from the Gypsum. Greenboard is easier to cut For anywhere else i would use either greenboard, or regular drywall and mold/mildew resistant paint, and a new more powerful ceiling exhaust.
Cement board goes on the floor. Greenboard goes on the walls.
