Question:

Checkerboard Cake Recipe.?

For Christmas every year I make some kind of dessert and usually try to go with one that is either extremely different or far more difficult than anybody in my family would usually attempt (we get a lot of the cheesecakes, chocolate cake, pie, etc)This year I decided I wanted to make a checkerboard cake using green and redI bought a white cake mix that I will prepare and then split in half and add red food coloring to one half and green to the otherA recipe that I have heard before is:1.) Place the two cake batters each into separate piping bags2.) Using a round cake pan pipe batter 1 alone the edge, followed by batter 2, and so on and so on in an alternating fashion until the pan is filled. So basically my questions are:1.) Has anybody used this before and does it work?2.) The recipe is for TWO cake pans worth of cake, do I have to use 2 pans (so two boxes of cake mix) or can I make it smaller by only using the one layer and still have the checkerboard pattern? Thanks for all of your help!

Answer:

Sorry, but I never felt felt that felt like felt till I felt the felt on my new felt hatMaybe I will get a felt sweater for Christmas and then tell you what that felt felt like.
First of all, it needs to be made of wool or another animal fiber, or it won't feltAnd some wools are treated (superwash) and they won't felt eitherBut otherwise, washing it in hot water with soap will cause it to feltYou may need to send it through several cycles in your washing machineAnd yes, once it is felt, it will not unravel.
I have a checker board cake pan set! you can make one very easily that will work the same way make a ring of aluminum foil 2 inches inside the outer rim of the cake pan on each panMake another ring 2 inches inside that one put chocolate cake in the outside ring on 2 pans and white cake in outside ring on other panPut white cake in next ring in on the 2 pans with chocolate in them and chocolate in the othrPut chocolate in the center ring in the first 2 pans and white in the othrwhen you stack the cake, put the one with chocolate outside on the bottom, the white outside next and the other chocolate lastLift out the foil rings just before putting the things in the oven, very carefullyThis is so much easier than piping the batters into the pans1 cake mix will work for 3 9-inch round pans!! Just divide the batter in half and stir melted semi sweet chocolate into half the batterOne recipe of cake will work for 3 layer cakes very very nicelyDo not ever think you need 1 box mix for each round pan unless the pans are 12 inches across!!!! Then you will have some left over to make cupcakes out ofor a tiny 4 inch cakeCake batter is not supposed to be more than half full before baking It rises!!! cool the cakes 15 minutes then flip out on waxed papers and the cake platePut butter cream icing between layers!
