Question:

cleaning oil marks from microfiber sofa?

A visitor sat on our beige color sofa, made of micro fiber, leaving behind a patch of stains. She later told us that she has a skin condition that requires massaging with some oil.The sofa cover is fixed (not the removable washable kind) and we need to clean it. Is there any special chemical solution that helps remove the stain? Professional cleaners here in Germany charge a fortune for such a service.

Answer:

on microfiber everything causes stains, even water. only way to clean microfiber furniture is to clean the entire couch. you CANNOT spot clean it
my father in law is famous for not taking off his shoes when he comes into the house, no matter what is on them, or how many times we ask. he has brought in every kind of stain immaginable. the best thing that i have found to work on it all is a product called oxi clean. use the powder form of it. what we do, is put a scoop in a bowl, with some water, then scrub it out with a bristle brush. scrub as much as you can out, but know that oxi clean does a lot of the work while it's drying. you may need to do it 2x, but it should do the job. good luck!
Dawn dish-washing liquid is the best thing for cutting grease or oil stains. I would put it directly on the stain and scrub it in well. Let it soak in an then rinse and blot. My husband is a chef and his shirts are constantly getting grill grease on them. Dawn is the best thing that I have found to remove the grease. Dawn is what the environment uses for oil spills in the ocean. They also use it to clean up the feathers of water birds that get caught in the oil slicks.
Never use laundry products on fabrics outside the laundry. They have ruined thousands of yards of carpeting in the US, including bleach and, yes, Oxy Clean. These products should only be used on white fabrics. Professional cleaners carry the necessary products on their van that remove grease/oil stains. One product that is popular is Pro's Choices's Citra Gel. A white creamy solution that cleans well and is easily rinsed out. Unfortunately, the homemaker does not have the ability to fully extract the combinations of solutions from the fabric. Also, micro fiber material can leave water marks/stains if only a partial area of the sofa is cleaned. You need to make the entire surface wet/damp to prevent that from happening. If you decide to resort to cleaning the sofa yourself, try using a mixture of dye free dish soap in a spray bottle as your cleaner, mist the whole sofa with a spray bottle of warm water and than wipe it down with a terry cloth towel. Sponge the stained area repeatedly to remove the soap and grease. Dye free means not colored. Use a clear or white dish soap so you will not accidently dye the fabric.
