Question:

Closet door painting?

Am I able to paint these closet doors? If so is there a particular paint to use?

Answer:

You can buy one coat an/or non drip gloss/satin paint. The trick with painting is to clean the surface of dirt and grease. If you use a nylon scouring pad too it will help the paint to adhere properly.
Yes you can paint them.. I would suggest sanding them down first so the paint adheres properly, then use a oil based matt paint for wood. Use a brush for the curved bits, then a gloss roller for the flat bits. You may need a couple of coats, though. You may want to use an undercoat first?
Your doors are 6 Panel Elite made Hardboard/Masonite use a quality Semi- Gloss latex paint, wash first W/ warm soapy water or TSP, Lightly sand and dust. If there are Crayon or ink marks use Kilz stain blocker Spray can to keep stain from bleeding through before applying Top Coat -- Your S/G paint. Paint Panels first then Outside area. Try to maintain Wet Edge for best results.
The finish on those doors looks like they are in good condition so there shouldn't be a problem with repainting them. You will first need to rough up the surface a little with a 120-150 grit sandpaper. Just a quick go over is adequate . I would suggest a good quality interior high gloss acrylic latex paint as that is the most durable of paints and recommended for woodwork, windowsills, and doors. That type of paint has the most scrubbability which is what you want. Use a high quality synthetic paint brush and while painting in one direction, lightly go back across your strokes for a brush mark free surface. I really like Olympic Paint , if you can find that anymore. Adding some Flowtrol to your paint before applying it will drastically reduce any brush marks also. With Flowtrol, any marks just melt into the wet paint until gone , and that I love. Doesn't matter whether wood or plastic, both surfaces will accept new paint if prepared correctly and you needn't a special paint for one or the other.
Yes, you can paint them. Use a wide brush - 3 or 4 inches. It will look nice. Use interior latex paint. Most paint is latex. Oil based paint is a pain to work with so don't mistakenly buy it. Kitchen and bath paint is a little tougher than most interior paints so it can withstand the washing and scrubbing. You should use it on the doors because doors have a tougher life and need a tougher paint. I remember painting my kitchen and reading the label, and that's what it said. You want either Satin or Semi-Gloss. You probably don't want gloss; it is the shiniest, and it brings out the imperfection in wood a bit. It's just your preference between Satin and Semi-Gloss; both would look nice. You should scrub the doors first, preferably with TSP cleaner. Use a bucket of water, TSP soap, and a sponge. Then, rinse it with the sponge with water. TSP will totally wipe out most grime and pen marks really good. Good luck.
