If it's frozen just on the surface, put your hand over the key-hole for a minute or two it will be cold, but your body heat will thaw it out. but I disagree with your dad about heating the key, how does he know it's not frozen inside too? If you do get it unfrozen, lube it up good with WD-40 this will keep it from re-freezing.
