Hello! I have some exit signs, and they have silver colored wiring (which I assume is aluminum) with no plugs on the endsI want to take home extension cords (or lamp cords) wich have copper wire, and connect them to the wires on the exit signsI was watching the TV show quot;Holmes On Homesquot;, and they said connecting silver and copper wire together is OK, providing you use a special paste before connecting the wires togetherBut that was for wiring your whol home permanently. All I want to do is have cords on these signs, so I can plug them in and admire them lit up for awhileI won't be leaving them plugged in 24/7, 365.just occocasionly using them every so often. So will connecting copper and aluminum be a problem in my case? Or am I just worrying about nothing? Thanks!
When connecting aluminum and copper wires together in home wiring, an anti-oxidation compound (commonly called de-ox) is requiredSpecial wirenuts with the compound already injected into the wirenuts (purple in color for easy identification) are often usedHowever, de-ox is not needed with fixture wiresAny wire connector of the appropriate size can be usedIn short: Don't worry about it.
