Question:

Converting residential oil boiler to electric system?

Can an existing residential oil burning boiler system be converted to an electric heated boiler system by merely replacing the boiler unit and adding a dedicated electrical supply line. The house is nearly 100 years old and the existing system is still functioning properly. Do the new electric systems have internal parts that now exist on the outside of my current boiler that can be eliminated. To save money, I'd like to use all the existing components that I can if this isn't going to create a problem making the conversion successful. All advise and guidance is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Answer:

Installation by Heating professional is required but it will be on any replacement system of this kind. Shouldn't need to add anything special into the system if you already have a working boiler system.
I had an oil fired compelled air furnace for years. easily enjoyed the warmth because of the fact oil has greater BTU's consistent with unit than gas. however the scent and incessant burping of oil fired burners is demanding. Went to propane and has somewhat much less warmth yet i like it. Being on a organic gas line i does not hesitate being #2 oil is now outrageous. you have to be pleased with a clean gas fired boiler.
Not sure exactly what you mean by extra parts. You will have to have your old boiler removed and a new one installed. If by extra parts you mean things like condensate return, steam traps, etc. then maybe some of it can be reused. Have someone look at the system and let you know of it's condition. If you have a low pressure boiler then there probably isn't any of that stuff on it. You will want to have a contractor look at it and install the new one. Be safe boilers can blowup. edit: sorry miss read, it was late and I was tired. Still not sure what parts you mean. Doesn't matter it will be an easy change over. Get a contractor out there to bid the job. Bids will not cost you anything and you can ask them (the person looking at it, not the one seeing some typing on a computer). This is not a Do it yourself project. Good luck
