Question:

Copper Bullets?

I am interested in creating an experiment to detirme if a copper bullet could be dangerous to digest and to see how long the copper stays in a body till it is ejected. This relates to the recent arguement of the Californian Condors and hunters being forced to use copper bullets. They argue that using Copper Bullets is just as dangerous as using Lead bullets. I seek to prove that wrong... or right. Has any reseach been done to confirm this?

Answer:

Lead bullets and shot cause lead pollution in wetlands. In many countries lead shot has been banned in favour of steel. Copper will cause heavy metal poisoning if left in the body although some people who were shot during WWII still have bullets inside them. Copper jacketed bullets have to be used in high velocity firearms because softer metals will be stripped by the rifling in the barrel and harder metals will damage the rifling at will niot spin fast enough to be accurate.
copper is still used today in modern plumbing which replaced lead pipes
