Question:

Copper does not follow the Aufbrau Principal. ?

Please draw the long and short version of the electron configuration of Copper. Draw the Lewis Electron dot diagram for copper (Cu). Explain what copper does that does not follow the Aufbrau principal and why it does it.

Answer:

from wikipedia: Elemental copper should have 9 electrons in 3d orbital. But, its electronic configuration is [Ar].3d10.4s1 instead of [Ar].3d9.4s2 as would be expected by the Madelung rule. By filling the 3d orbital, copper can be in a lower energy state. this happens because the bandwidth gap between the 9th and 10th electrons in the 3d oblital is less that that of the 9th electron in the 3d orbital and the 2nd electron in the 4s orbital. keep in mind that atoms want to be in the lowest energy state. it is worth noting thaqt this also violates the Pauli exclusion principle.
