I just bought an investment property, the ranch house is in very good condition except the copper plumping has been stolen out of the basement! I want to replace it back with copper. My question is: is the type M (thin wall) copper pipe ok to use for residential or would it be worth the extra $120.00 - $150.00 and use the type L (heavy wall)?
Type M is the most commonly used. And a lot easier to work with than the type L
There are three (3) types of copper water tube, Type K - has the heaviest wall and is used for high pressure applications, Type L – used for medium pressure applications and Type M - a tube for low pressure applications. It's best to check with your local building inspector to see what type you can use in your house. Type L and M are most commonly used inside houses. Here in Ct., type L is used for water and type M is used for heat/lower PSI systems
