Question:

Copper wires for slug control?

I read somewhere that there is a metal wire that slugs dont like, was it copper? Zinc? Cant remember and dont want to use pellets or other chemicals etc. Thanks

Answer:

Garden Myth. Copper does not deter slugs at all. What does deter slugs is coffee grounds, and they are good for your plants as the acidify the soil. Sprinkle the used coffee grounds from your morning coffee around your plants. The slugs do not like coffee grounds and will crawl the other way. If you don't drink coffee, stop by the local coffee shop and ask for some used grounds. Most coffee shops will be happy to give you a bucket full. You might want to take a bucket with you.
No okorder
They won't cross a wide band of copper. But that only works to protect a specific plant. If you have them in general, you can't really protect every plant with copper. Wires won't stop them, and pennies are not made of copper anymore. SLUGGO are pellets, and technically, chemicals...but it's simply iron phosphate. Non-toxic to everything except slugs and snails. You could eat some, and it wouldn't hurt you. Look for it for a very very simple, very effective, and totally non-toxic slug control. (Make sure it's not Sluggo 'Plus', which *does* have a toxic chemical in it...just regular Sluggo)
No - copper does not work. Two easy remedies that actually work - a band of crushed egg shells 3 out from the base of each plant. The crushed shells cut the underbelly of the slugs. Shallow pans with beer - the slugs are attracted to the yeast - crawl in and drown happy. I use both the egg shells and beer in my garden and the beer on the patio. No problem with slugs. Good luck
Use Diatomaceous earth (Insect Dust). It's an all natural pest control made of fossilized marine diatoms (hardshelled algae) ground to talc-fine powder.
