The valves on our 2005 Pontiac Sunfire are bent and need fixing. Any idea of how much it might cost to have them fixed at a shop? Any estimates?
So how did the valves get bent? My guess is there is more damage than that. Usually bent valves occur because the engine is not cared for properly and the timing belt is not replaced as spec'd. The broken timing belt then leads to valve clash which can often damage the pistons and bearings. Do you know the rest of the engine is OK? My advice si not to proceed unless you are certain. A junk yard and rebuilt head for your engine will cost $1,500 installed. If other parts of the engine are bad, this is wasted money. Astrobuf
Most mechanics will put on a rebuilt head -- if you were to buy it, they cost approx $350 for the head assembly.
ask different shops for a quote, once you're done start calling junk yards and ask for the price of that engine and how much warranty. you'd be surprised, you can get anything from 1 month to 1 year warranty on a used engine from a junk yard. in any case get the best price + best warranty. if you buy the engine alone from the JY get ready to pay about 350 to 500 just for removing the old engine AND installing the new bought engine. if you wait until winter these numbers might vary. gl
To replace valves would probably run around $500. Plus they will probably charge you about 8-10 hours in labor to remove/reinstall the head from the block at about $90-$100 an hour. Not to mention the replacement of gaskets which could be around $100-150 So it can get pricey. I would budget for about a $1750-$2000 worst case to have this fixed. I am sure this isn't what you want to hear but once you start getting into the internals of the engine, things are going to get pricey.
