Question:

crush and run foundation question?

i am getting a car port and im going to lay down some crush and run for the foundation if i get a plate tamper and tamp it down will it be anything like asphalt or still loose stone

Answer:

The term crusher run describes the end product of operating the rock crusher at a quarry. Its usually available with several different rock sizes (i.e. #1, 2). Sometimes the crusher run contains a large portion of fines (the accumulated dust from the crushed rock) which is exactly what you need for a driveway or your foundation use. There should be enough of those fines so that when its dampened and compacted they act as sort of a bonding agent with the rock and it forms a good hard surface. When the crusher run doesn't have enough fines in it the rock remains loose and can easily be scratched up by tires in a driveway when they lose traction. For your use however it would probably serve the purpose if your intention is to pave the area under the carport. If you do not intend to pave over it ask for more of the fines in the mix.
it will never set like you want it too!!!!! if you cant pour a concrete slab the next best is crush lime stone. why? spray it with water when it gets wet it bonds together. limestone will bond its self together better than any material with the exception of the real mc coy (concrete)
Yes the stone is there for drainage and also to protect the pipes from freezing. Pipes by law have to be a certain depth. Water pipes I know is 18 Electrical 16 I think not sure varies state to state. If you set on a flower bed I bring stone 1/2 below surface. Then I put in some landscape timbers or a kind of boarder and add potting soil plant and use pine straw wood chips whatever works for you. But do not take that stone out. it is important. Take care and happy digging
it packs pretty nice, but its still loose stone. with no cement to keep it tiogether it will still move (rain gully washers, peel wheels . . etc) I had it in my drive it did OK was failry cheap. I think they called it crusher run. its the junk they clear from the crusher at the quarry. its as small as it can get crushed.
