Question:

Crushed stone is commonly dolomite, what special test can be done to indicate that calcite is present?

Crushed stone is commonly dolomite, what special test can be done to indicate that calcite is present?

Answer:

mix the mineral with dilute hydrochloric acid. if you it gets all bubbly it's probably calcite.
usually dolomite does not fizz with dilute HCl unless you turn it to powder first. calcite will always fizz. so, if a chunk of it fizzes, it is probably calcite.
Put acid on it. Calcite effervesces (it fizzles).
