In the beaker with the solid copper is a dissolved solution of zinc sulfate. The final washing removes the soluble ZnSO4. That all depends on what the copper looked like at the beginning. When I do this with my students, we start with copper pennies, and end up with mossy copper. The copper is mossy because it deposited atom by atom as zinc metal reduces copper(II) ions to copper metal.
